P rofessor Eric BERGSTEN was a member of the Secretariat of UNCITRAL for sixteen years, 1975 to 1991. During the early years of his service he was the Secretary of the UNCITRAL Working Group that prepared what became the CISG. During the last six years he was the Secretary of the Commission and, as such, the Chief of the Secretariat.
Prior to his service with the Commission Professor BERGSTEN was a professor of law at the University of Iowa, where he taught primarily commercial law. Following his retirement from UNCITRAL he taught at Fordham University for a year and subsequently at Pace University.
He has been a member of the CISG-Advisory Council since its inception and he was the President from 2007 to 2011.
For the first 20 years of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot from 2003 to 2013 Professor BERGSTEIN was its director and remains President of its parent body, the Association for the Organisation and Promotion of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
Among the awards bestowed upon he have been the President’s Award for Leadership in Conflict Management from the American Arbitration Association and the Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of International Commercial Arbitration.
